to SciClone Pharmaceuticals International SciClone Pharmaceuticals International Ltd., also referred to as SPIL, is a Cayman Island based subsidiary and the international sales arm of SciClone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. SPIL generated $37.0 million in ZADAXIN® sales in 2007. SPIL is headquartered in Hong Kong, with regional management offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Singapore and Grand Cayman, B.W.I. SPIL has obtained regulatory approvals for ZADAXIN in various countries for the treatment of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cancer, and for the use as a vaccine adjuvant. ZADAXIN is now approved for sale in over 30 countries worldwide. SPIL sells ZADAXIN primarily through importers and distributors in China, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Italy. SPIL's parent company, SciClone Pharmaceuticals Inc., a NASDAQ listed company (SCLN), is a biopharmaceutical company whose lead product ZADAXIN (thymosin alpha 1) is currently in phase 3 hepatitis C clinical trials in Europe. A phase 2 malignant melanoma study was completed in Europe in late 2006. ZADAXIN fights disease by working to enhance the body's immune system and therefore may be applicable in the treatment of several infectious diseases and certain cancers.. In 2006, SPIL signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Biocompatibles U.K. Ltd. to market the DC Bead, in China and is currently working to register DC Bead for sale. DC Bead, a drug eluting bead, is a drug delivery embolization system intended to be loaded with a drug for the purpose of treating a variety of malignant hypervascularised tumors and particularly for use in trans-arterial chemoembolisation (TACE). DC Bead is most commonly used for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver metastases, cholangiomas and neuroendocrine cancers. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or primary liver cancer, is the fifth most common form of cancer worldwide, but represents the third most common cause of death from cancer. Over half of all worldwide cases of liver cancer occur in China with nearly 350,000 new cases and over 300,000 deaths each year. SPIL is conducting clinical trials in certain countries as needed to obtain further registrations, and is filing the necessary registration documents in countries where commercialization is possible based on currently available data.
